Watermarking: where tradition meets innovation
A centuries-old history in the heart of paper
Watermarking first appeared in France in the 14th century. Originally used to identify papermakers and certify the origin of the paper, it quickly became a key element of authentication.
Historically watermarks illustrated everyday objects, religious symbols, or Gothic motifs. Today, they are found in secured official documents, banknotes, means of payment, luxury editions, and more recently, used as a tool to protect brands against counterfeiting.
A timeless manufacturing technique
A watermark is a subtle imprint visible through the paper, resulting from a precise and an age-old process. The watermark patterns are embossed or welded onto the mesh of the dandy roll — this metallic grid locally alters the density of the paper pulp, resulting in an elegant imprint embedded within the paper itself.
There are several types of watermarks, depending on their complexity:
- Single-tone: one level of transparency.
- Two-tone: two density levels for stronger contrast.
- Multi-tone: fine gradation of tones, similar to image shading.
Though traditional, this technique remains highly effective: it integrates the design directly into the paper’s structure, making reproduction or forgery impossible. The security is embedded in the material itself, ensuring both durability and discretion.
At Papeteries de Vizille, we offer three standard watermarks: Leaf, Wave, and V. Discover our latest creation, Honeycomb, a geometric watermark. We also create custom watermarks — get in touch.
The ideal structure for security papers
Because it’s embedded during sheet formation, the watermark acts as a first line of defense against counterfeiting. It can be combined with other security features:
- Colored fibers, visible or invisible to the naked eye
- Taggants detectable with specific tools
- Invisible chemical markers
These combinations allow for multi-level security papers tailored to the needs of institutional or private clients.
A discreet signature for demanding brands
Beyond its technical functions, the watermark becomes a visual storytelling element in the world of luxury. In industries such as perfumery, cosmetics, or wine & spirits, it can:
- Create coherence across packaging elements
- Reinforce product traceability and authenticity
- Offer a sensory experience from the first touch of the paper
Similarly, when acquiring a rare item—such as a perfume, a luxury piece of jewelry, a prestigious wine, or an exceptional car—the delivery of a certificate of ownership printed on watermarked paper ensures the certificate’s authenticity, confirms ownership for the holder, and reinforces the brand’s image. A discreet and refined security solution.
Expertise dedicated to unique projects
Watermarking embodies a rare alliance between artisanal tradition and technical precision. Its discretion, durability, and adaptability make it a unique and prestigious security solution for institutions, brands, or designers seeking distinction.
Behind every design there is a gesture, an intention, and expertise worth exploring.
